MINIS AND JUNIORS
Mini Athletes is open to children aged 4 to 8 and is run through the community club South West Athletics. Juniors is for children aged 8-11. The aim is to provide year round activities developing co-ordination, balance and fitness through sprinting, throwing and jumping activities, games and other related activities.
SESSIONS, VENUES AND TIMES
Sessions are now every week throughout the year at Exeter Arena, plus we we run holiday activities and other events and competitions throughout the year such as the Sportshall indoor athletics.
- Mini & Junior Athletes – Mondays – 6-7pm at Exeter Arena. Please click here to book a place.
- Mini & Junior Athletes – Wednesdays 5-6pm at Exeter Arena. Please click here to book a place.
We plan to have more Mini and Junior sessions at various new locations in the South West.
We prefer it if everyone (if possible) pays via our website as we need to pay for the venues in advance. This will also help us to plan how many coaches we will need at each session. Booking and payment is easy and quick. You can book for each month online which gives you a discount on the usual pay on the day rate – fee is £20 per month ( £5 per session – one session a week).
Become a South West Athletics Member and enjoy even cheaper rates for all training
If you become a member of SWA, you become eligible to pay for sessions monthly via standing order. This is the cheapest way to pay for coaching and gives you a discount on the pay on the day rate. Membership forms are available from coaches at the Minis sessions. Please ask for details (sessions work out at around £4.50 per session).
Run Around for £2
Come and try the first session for just £2!
If parents pay for one session at at a time the cost is £6.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do I need? Just PE kit, trainers a drink and a tracksuit in case it’s a bit cold and lots of energy of course! You can of course buy one of our brightly coloured popular Mini Athlete-shirts from the shop at the Arena turnsties. Just ask a member of staff.
Is it indoors or outdoors?
In the winter we are at Exeter Arena Athletics Track or use indoor sports halls and focus on Sportshall Athletics which uses specially adapted equipment which is great fun to use. During the summer we train at Exeter Arena for the groups in Exeter which gives the children chance to train at a great athletics track.
TESTIMONIAL FROM A MINI ATHLETE’S DAD
‘We’ve been taking our kids to sessions at the Arena since the South West Athletics Academy started up. The sessions are brilliantly run by friendly and knowledgeable folk who delight in getting the kids involved from a very early age. The way information and training is imparted is very clever, and although they’re learning a great deal of sporting technique it’s done in such a way that they just keep coming back for more. A superb introduction to athletics.’

MINI athletes are supported by Westerly Exeter MINI.www.westerlyexetermini.co.uk
We believe that there is a great opportunity for young children to experience activities and games that can lead into any sport. Athletics forms a large part of fundamental movement skills and can help with physical development and co-ordination – whilst having lots of FUN!
Mini Athletics provides the oppportunity to have some structured activities for younger children and on reaching the appropriate age they can move into one of our Academy Junior Groups (8-11) which run at the same time as the Minis.
We use a combination of methods so the children can see their progress including:
- A sticker card so that the children can choose a sticker to mark activities they have done. The feet stickers are especially popular!
- A badge system that is based on points and performances – it is structured, fun and based on a national system.
